Description
A group gasket is the flat seal the portafilter locks against. It hardens with heat, and once it has, the portafilter creeps further round the group each month and a thin jet of water escapes at the side of the handle during a shot. Most machines want a new one once a year.
The kit holds two gaskets in food-grade silicone at the usual 8.5 mm thickness, one stainless shower screen, one screen screw, and a hooked pick for lifting the old gasket out of its channel. Silicone stays softer than the rubber gaskets many machines ship with, so the portafilter keeps roughly the same engagement point through the year.
Fitting takes about ten minutes on a cold machine. Take out the screen screw, drop the screen, work the pick under the old gasket at two opposite points and prise it out. Wipe the channel clean, press the new gasket in flat side down, then refit the screen and the screw hand tight.
For 58 mm groups. Check your thickness before ordering, as a few machines use an 8.0 mm or 9.0 mm seal.
